Gregory Deva 60 pkeack -womens

The last time I went backpacking was in 2013 when my sister and I backpacked through Europe. We lived in separate cities at the time. I remember when she saw me with my backpack for the first time before our departure she said “Is that your backpack?! I thought we were doing a carry on size?” Unlike my sister’s pack, I had borrowed a guy friends backpack that was rather large. I don’t take the spirit of “traveling light” well. So the backpack was stuffed full.

Fast forward to 2017 and the need for my very own backpack this time. I had certain requirements for my pack: (a) front loading to allow easy access (b) ability to carry onto an airplane (c) rain cover – just a plus, not necessary as these can be purchased separately (d) lockable zippers (e) sufficient padding/comfort (f) pockets on the hip panels – another plus (g) compression straps and (h) removable day pack – another plus, not necessary.

The winner… The Gregory Deva 60L Women’s Day Pack (https://www.rei.com/product/881007/gregory-deva-60-pack-womens)! After my visit to REI, I was planning to purchase the Gregory Jade 63L Women’s Day Pack as it met all my requirements above. While in line at customer service to order the pack in purple, I ran into a friend returning an earlier version of the backpack. With her advice (and discount to REI – thanks girl), I was able to upgrade to the Gregory Deva backpack. The Jade has a smaller frame, which meant the 63L was less supported by your back. The Deva meant all of my requirements above, had additional padding, and a longer frame.

My only concern with the Gregory Deva is that the dimensions are likely too big to officially meet the carry on dimension requirements. I am hoping that not filling the backpack completely and using the compression straps will allow me to still carry it on my flights.

Other packs I was highly considering:

Osprey Auro 50 AG Pack (https://www.rei.com/product/878454/osprey-aura-50-ag-pack-womens) – I did not like the frame on this pack because it ended high off my shoulders and didn’t allow my head to look up easily.

Gregory Jade 63L Pack (https://www.rei.com/product/895094/gregory-jade-63-pack-womens) – as mentioned above, this pack had a shorter frame. This meant all my gear would be wider vs. longer. That said, I still think this is a great pack and meant my requirements.

Things I learned about buying backpacks:

1. Going to a store, such as REI. It helps to try them on in person. Also, you can get fitted for a backpack by an expert.

2. Fitting a backpack: the hip belt/clip will sit on the top of your hip bone, which should align with your belly button. REI has experts that will be able to help measure you. You can also check out REI’s sizing and fitting guide (https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/backpacks-adjusting-fit.html). I am 5’11”, yet only need a small backpack!

3. Do your research – make sure your pack will be right for you and your travels
