Keeping Budget Airlines Budget Friendly: Flying with a Personal Item

Heyyy, it’s me, BeSeeingTheWorldYo! If you know me, you know I’m always on the hunt for a good deal—especially when it comes to travel. So when I heard about Frontier’s too-good-to-be-true offer where you could score Frontier Elite Gold Status by simply linking your Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards number and paying just $40, I jumped on it faster than a $19 fare to Denver. And guess what? I’m now officially Gold through April 2026. Budget luxury, here I come. Heads up: The Frontier offer disappears after April 30, 2025 — so if you’re ready to fly, now’s the time to make your move!

I love a good Frontier deal, but you won’t catch me dropping $89 just to pick a seat or bring a carry-on. Nope—I travel light. We’re talking ultra-light. Just a personal item, folks. Which brings me to that one time I flew from San Francisco to Denver for a whopping $19 to visit my sister, brother-in-law, and adorable niece, Olivia. I mean, come on—how do you say no to that?

One Time I Crushed a Personal Item Challenge

Eager to actually fly halfway across the counter for $19, I packed up my personal item and hurried through the airport just in time for final boarding. But of course, the infamous personal item checker caught me. The front pocket of my backpack was stuffed with too many items, and boom—I’m emptying out my sunscreen, lotion, pill cases, and whatever else I could shove into my sweatshirt kangaroo-style. A little chaotic? Sure. But I made it. And somehow, I still scored a window seat—7F. Total win.

Watch It All Go Down

Want to see the behind-the-scenes of my Frontier adventure? I filmed it all for the vlog— last boarding call and personal item checker chaos not captured. Check it out and fly vicariously through me.

Pro Tips for Flying Frontier Like a Pro (or a Cheapskate with Class)

1. Hide your stuff smart – Wear a belt bag as a cross body under a sweatshirt or jacket or wear a sweatshirt/jacket with big pockets to squeeze in your extra items. So clutch!

2. Don’t pay for seat selection – Let fate (and Frontier’s algorithm) decide. I like to gamble and check in closer to the flight time in hopes the back seats are already filled.  You might just end up with a window seat and a killer view.  Want to be seated next to your crew? Just book your flights on the same reservation.

3. Know what you’re signing up for – Frontier is a budget airline. You’re not getting priority during delays, and sometimes, your gate will feel like it’s in a different airport. If you must be somewhere on time, build in that buffer or book with the big guys.

4. Mentally prepare – Budget travel isn’t glamorous, but with the right attitude (and hoodie pocket space), you’ll survive—and even thrive.

New Status, Who Dis?

With Elite Gold Status in hand, I’ll now flying Frontier like royalty—well, Frontier’s version of royalty. For the next year, I’ll get a free carry-on bag, priority boarding, and to pick my seat…without paying! And more importantly, I get to make more trips to see my growing fam—watching my nieces and nephews grow up is worth every budget flight delay and every TSA hustle.
